So you want to be rich...
Many people ask about the spiritual aspects of money, how to be more 'spiritually in tune’ with making money, and even why some ‘bad’ people seem to prosper.
While there are many so-called ‘spiritual laws’ governing money, there is no secret to becoming financially wealthy.
2008/2009 may well be remembered as the year of financial meltdown, but for many it was business as usual.
The World Wealth Report 2008 showed that over 10 million people around the world had more than US$1 million in assets. Here are some points in common among them:
• Living below their means all their lives. This means that these people kept money to save. No matter how little you earn, if you do not save you cannot become wealthy.
• Allocating time, energy and money to increasing their wealth. No one will look after your money as well as you can. Learn about investing and do not believe what the media and so-called experts tell you.
• Believing that financial independence is more important than displaying status. For many people, being seen to be rich is more important than actually being rich. This is looking for approval from others and believing that if you are rich people will like you. Don’t waste your money.
• Their parents did not provide them with financial handouts. This develops self-reliance and a ‘can-do’ attitude. Some might call it an entrepreneur spirit. If there is no safety net, your high-wire walking is much improved.
• Being extremely focused and passionate about their business or occupation. Perhaps this is the most important. Many wealthy people spend a lot of time and energy on their business; they did not become wealthy by chance.
To this I would add:
• Take the long-term view. Compound interest is an extraordinary force over many years, and get-rich-quick schemes are usually doomed to failure.
The reason most people are not wealthy, despite having worked for many years, is that they have not learned what money is and how to handle it. Instead of praying to Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, pray to Sarasvati, goddess of learning. Lakshmi will become jealous and shower you with her blessings in an attempt to win you to her.
