Internal gender

Taoism tells us that men are yang on the outside and yin on the inside (outwardly appearing hard and sharp, yet inwardly soft and yielding) while women are the opposite; soft and yielding on the outside yet inwardly strong.

Maybe this is why it is women that have the endurance and strength to carry a pregnancy and deliver, and in many parts of the world, it is women who provide the bulk of agricultural labour.

Concepts about our own masculinity or femininity seem to be attached to stereotypes. For example, if a man is bottle-feeding an infant, the tendency might be to say he is expressing his femininity. However, we could say that he is being a good father and is simply being caring and loving.

If a woman likes keeping the house clean, that is acceptable, but if she starts putting up shelves then jokes about her ability or sexual orientation are made. Surely this is as creative as any other 'feminine' activity?

When we start to separate activities into and identify ourselves with labels of masculine and feminine we in effect cut off from parts of ourself. While this obviously limits the life we can experience, it also limits our ability to understand the other sex.

Many men do not know how to cook and do not want to learn as it is 'women's work'. They are not able to experience the joy of creating tasty food for themselves and others. A woman who will not learn how to change a plug or set up a piece of home equipment (I'll find a man to do it) misses out on the satisfaction of completing a logical puzzle.

Although the brains of men and women are 'wired' differently, giving particular strengths to each gender in certain areas, by refusing to attempt 'tasks of the other gender' we cannot become who we could be.

Yes, we may be afraid that 'people' will say "He's too feminine," or make comments about perceived sexuality, or say, "She's not very feminine," and make other unflattering remarks, but if you try to live your life pleasing others you will be very busy!

Understanding the other gender is more than just good communication with men/women. It is about understanding those parts of ourself that we do not (or do not want to) recognize.

Book of the Month:

Escape Your Own Prison - Bernard Starr

Former psychologist Starr explains why counselling alone cannot bring peace of mind.

Marrying Western psychology with Eastern philosophy, Starr makes a practical bridge between the two in ways that can be applied to daily life.

Full of interesting tid-bits as well as 'self-help' exercises, Escape Your Own Prison is well-worth reading.

Quote of the month:

“We've begun to raise daughters more like sons... but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.”

Gloria Steinem
