“Dreams are more real than reality itself; they are closer to the self.”

Dreams of the dreamer
It is said that everyone dreams, even those who are sure that they don’t or are incapable of remembering their dreams. Powerful dreams have a profound effect on us, causing us to deeply think about what the meaning of them is. Despite this deep effect, many people have little understanding of what dreaming can be.
Jung believed that dreams are a powerful insight into the subconscious, revealing information that the conscious mind cannot or will not access. Interestingly, when we perceive ourselves in our own dreams, who is having the dream? Us, our subconscious, or someone/something else?
Another idea is that dreams are a form of ‘housekeeping’, putting into order events of the day. Another way to look at it would be to think of dreams as putting books on the correct shelves in a library.
However, dreams can be far more than messages from the subconscious or tidying up. For example, they can be messages from the higher self and from ancestors, or even more ‘physical’ aspects of one’s self, such as the kidneys explaining why they are tired.
Dreams are also a place in which we can learn or develop abilities and skills, such as riding a horse or playing the guitar. Through dreaming about these activities, the body starts to learn on a very deep level.
We can remove blocks in our subconscious through dreaming thereby helping us to become who we want to be. This is not receiving information, rather it is using dreaming as a form of therapy in which the experience of the dream itself, rather than its symbology, is significant.
Occasionally, dreams show future events very clearly, but this is usually a skill that has to be developed with practice.
And then there is the development of lucid dreaming, wherein you know that you are dreaming and have the ability to control the dream for a specific purpose. There are also ‘dream networks’ where people around the world ‘share’ a dream or meet each other in a conscious manner in a dream.
Depending on the tradition in which one studies dreaming, there are many purposes to dreaming, and many different ‘dream worlds’ that we can enter. Some even believe that this ‘waking life’ is just another dream state and that when we ‘die’ all we do is simply wake up somewhere else.
Learning to dream, remember the dreams, and have some conscious control over what you dream and why is a skill that is worth learning; after all, we spend nearly one-third of our lives asleep so we might as well use the time even more beneficially.
If you are interested in dreaming and would like to learn more, just send us an email and we’ll show you what’s “out there/in there,” and what you can do with it.
Book of the Month:
The Wisdom of Your Dreams - Jeremy Taylor
For over 40 years, Jeremy Taylor has studied dreams and worked with thousands of individuals. The Wisdom of Your Dreams is an update of his classic Where People Fly and Water Runs Uphill.
Taylor outlines what he believes are ten basic tenets of dreams, and gives practical advise on how to dream, remember them and learn from them. Not a 'dream dictionary', but a useful and interesting book for self-insight.
