Life Everlasting

It used to be that in autumn, communities would dig graves for children. This was because the ground was not frozen and they knew that some children would not survive the winter.

Nowadays, death is something that usually only happens to those over a certain age. It is often preceded by illness and there is time to say goodbye. Sudden, unexpected death is rare by comparison in a developed society.

As a result, the ideas we have about death are what we have been told as we have little direct experience. Most of these are religious views such as going to heaven or hell, karma, and reincarnation.

No one can say what death truly is. Even if someone close has died and we go to the funeral, we see a dead body, we do not see a dead person. All that made up the person; his/her character, personality etc. was associated with the body, but the body was not him or her.

Yes, the body has 'given up the ghost' but the 'person' is still around in another form. The form we knew (the body) has gone but the life force, the consciousness that animated that body continues to exist - just as it existed before the person was physically born. It's just that we no longer have anything to do with him or her on a physical level.

The person we knew as our mother, father, whoever, no longer identifies with the persona s/he had and s/he no longer has the thoughts and feelings s/he did in physical  life,  s/he has a very different and wider perspective on life - and death.

As we become older, do we say that we are no longer ourselves? We no longer have the exact same form, beliefs or attitudes we had as children, yet we are clearly ourselves.

And so it is with death. While the form is no longer inhabited by the vitalising force, that force continues.

We could say that there is no such thing as death, only the continuation of life in various forms.

Book of the Month:

book

The Grace in Dying

No one can comfortably or convincingly talk about death; no one has the experience. In "The Grace in Dying" Singh presents her observations about death, and shows us that death is not to be feared.

Some of the book is needlessly cluttered with transpersonal psychology, but there are many useful and moving parts. On an impossible topic, "The Grace in Dying" does a reasonable job.

Quote of the Month:

“After your death you will be what you were before your birth.”

Arthur Schopenhaur
