Who do you want to be?
There is an idea often talked about in New Age circles that we are here on this planet because we chose to be. At some point prior to our incarnation, we looked at the ‘lives on offer’ and selected one, rather like looking up the movie listings and deciding on one to see. This movie, however, has a five-sense multitrack, not just sound and vision.
If this idea is indeed true, is it possible to identify some of the reasons you are living the life that you are?
What if you were able to take a step up and look down upon yourself from a higher position? As you look down, what kind of person would you see?
If your first thoughts are ones that you might consider to be negative, ask yourself what are the positive aspects of these negative thoughts. Write them down.
In identifying positive thoughts, try to be as specific as possible. What qualities does this person have, what are his/her aims and desires? How does this person manifest his/her values in the world? What are his/her needs and how does he/she try to meet them? Write down your ideas.
Next, look at the lists you have made and identify which items seem to resonate the most. These are the ones to focus on.
Which ones would you like to change, and which ones would you like to strengthen and develop?
When taking this overview, be as objective as possible. Avoid ‘feeling’ your responses in your body, instead, keep your viewpoint as ‘high’ as possible.
Doing this exercise can give you a real insight into why you decided to be here, and help you to focus on what is important in your life. It also allows you to clear away ideas that do not support you and reduces unwanted behaviour.
Only you can choose the life you lead (making no choice is making a choice, too). Getting clearer about the life you want to lead, rather than the one that may appear to be by default, will fill you with energy and happiness.
Book of the Month:
Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth and Happiness - Thaler and Sunstein
Individualist or conformist? Look for choices or take the default option?
Two professors from the University of Chicago look at how we make decisions, and how "choice architecture" shapes the way we behave.
Affecting many areas of our life, Nudge is a book for those interested in social policy and personal freedom.
Quote of the month:
“To live is to choose. But to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for, where you want to go and why you want to get there.”
