Bias

In December 2008, I wrote about filters and how we apply them to daily life by refusing to take in information that does not match our desires. In addition (as if that wasn’t bad enough), there are over 40 identified patterns of bias, or ways in which we adapt information and events to fit our beliefs and desires. Here are just a few of them.

Bandwagon effect: the tendency to follow or believe because others are doing so. Think about how styles become fashionable, only to disappear six months later.

Confirmation bias: the tendency to look for or interpret information to support pre-existing ideas. This is hard to overcome as being objective is difficult.

Focusing: placing too much importance on one element of a predicted event. The Iraqis were expected to be so overjoyed at the downfall of Saddam Hussein that all other considerations were ignored.

Disquiet: the tendency to judge taking action as more important than not taking action. All things will pass, and often no action is required other than waiting.

Loss aversion: the unhappiness of giving something up is greater than the happiness of acquiring it. Many people are in jobs that they do not like but feel more anguish about leaving the job than the pleasure they would get if they got the job.

Gambler’s fallacy: the belief that prior events affect later events. Even if I flip heads 10 times in a row, the probability of tails now coming up is still 50-50.

Self-fulfilling prophecy: engaging in behaviour that creates results that confirm our beliefs (conscious or otherwise). If I believe that you do not love me, I can act in ways that hurt you, causing you to react hurtfully, thereby giving me proof that you do not love me.

So what can we do to avoid or diminish the effects of biases? The best, and maybe most difficult thing to do, is to simply observe. While the mind does not like this as it is designed to judge, observers are generally happier.

In the words of the Greek –Armenian mystic/teacher and founder of the so called ‘Fourth Way”, George Gurdjieff, “Self-observation brings man to the realization of the necessity of self-change. And in observing himself a man notices that self-observation itself brings about certain changes in his inner processes. He begins to understand that self-observation is an instrument of self-change, a means of awakening.”

And what is the best exponent of observation?

Meditation.

Book of the Month:

The Intention experiment - Lynne McTaggart

Following her book The Field, McTaggart shows how intention can alter physical reality by working with the field that connects (or indeed contstructs) us all.

Not only does the author show how intention works, but she also gives practical exercises to build attention and focus.

Quote of the month:

"Two quite opposite qualities equally bias our minds - habits and novelty ."

Jean de la Bruyere
